Training Horses

Trust the Experts

Jonathan and Fiona have years of experience with natural talent for horsemanship. The perfect place to send your horse or pony for training.

Our Experience

For the last 40 years, Jonathan has taken horses and ponies in for training. All breeds, types and sizes have passed through his hands, from Shetlands to Shires , driving singly, as a pair or as part of bigger teams. He has travelled to such places as Israel, Turkey and France training horses for certain projects.

Some horses have been completely untouched on arrival whereas others only need a little progress in certain areas or refining. We are fortunate to be able to use our horses in agricultural work, and on the roads and can slot
young horses in with ours to give them a great experience.

The young horses see plenty of traffic and agricultural vehicles whilst they are here although we are in a very rural situation.

Our Training Course

Jonathan believes in developing a very strong bond of mutual trust between him and the horse. This is started when handling the young horses in the horse barn and then when the harness is put on acceptance of this is not a problem. During further training the trust develops further with long reining on the road and other experiences. Finally the bond is confirmed when the young horse is hitched up with one of our older horses to give the young horse confidence in his work.

Jonathan works hard to obtain a light mouth in all his horses. The importance of a light mouth is imperative in any horse but especially in a driving horse because verbal communication and good hands are the two most important aids when driving for a perfect performance.

When leaving, the horse will be confident as a single or part of a team and will work in chains, in shafts or on a pole. He can also back them to ride if required.

We welcome owners to visit at any time during their horse’s training but insist that they come and drive their horse themselves at the end to put it through their paces.

Accommodation is available at any time in the B and B in the farmhouse or glamping.
